How To Make The Most Of Your Iceland Vacation

Nowadays, more and more people are willing to travel further afield for a unique experience and tourists are increasingly choosing to go on an Iceland vacation.

Among the main reasons perhaps for this is that the climate in Iceland is surprisingly temperate, the people are very welcoming and the scenery is extremely beautiful. Winters are generally mild but can be windy and the summers are cool and damp. It’s maybe best to go in the summertime in order to take advantage of the long hours of daylight, and in fact you can even look at a midnight sun.

Iceland Is Now Well Served From Many European And US Destinations

This island of glaciers is full of volcanoes, geysers (hot springs), lakes and spas, and is one of the most geologically active places on the planet. Water sports are also particularly popular on an Iceland vacation, as are winter snowmobiling and dog sledging. Most people in Iceland speak English as a second language, and the currency is the Icelandic Krona. Icelandair is the main airline and operates flights to several European cities and US destinations, including New York, San Francisco and Boston (in summer).

Discover All The Different Things Reykjavik Can Offer

When on an Iceland vacation, the majority of tourists base themselves in the largest city and capital, Reykjavik. The city itself has much to offer and there are a number of excursions that go to other areas. The Old Town has beautiful unspoiled streets and buildings, and the National Museum and the National Cathedral are also located here. For the best views of the city, take a trip to the top of the Perlan Water Towers, which has a viewing area and a rotating restaurant. In addition, boat trips from the harbor can be booked to see whales, dolphins and puffins when in season, whle the nearest geysers are just one hour’s drive away. The city is renowned for its nightlife and has many lively clubs and bars. The local restaurants do tend to be slightly on the expensive side but there are many cheaper fast food options to be found in additon to several inexpensive family run Thai restaurants.

Be At One With Mother Nature And Witness Some Spectacular Scenery

In Iceland there really are so many scenic wonders to behold. For example, the Dettifoss Waterfall in the National Park of Jokulsargljufur is said to be the most powerful falls in Europe, with a 44 meter drop. The Thingvellir National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and is especially popular with nature lovers. Here the lake is full of brown trout and it’s also possible to see white-tailed eagles, foxes and minks. There are camping grounds and lots of hiking trails to follow as well.

No Holiday To Iceland Is Complete Without A Trip To The Blue Lagoon

And of course, no Iceland vacation is complete without a dip in a hot spring and the Blue Lagoon is the absolute perfect place to try one out. The relaxing waters are a favorite tourist destination and there are also saunas and mud baths to enjoy.
